Sew Crazy Day

Today has been a day to get sewing projects done.  I made a scrappy tutu skirt.  I believe cost me all of $1.50!  Yes, I love free boxes, mainly because anything from a free box is an experiment and if it goes horribly wrong it is OK because it was free to begin with.  The base of the skirt was free, a green jersey knit.  The scrappy over lay is mostly recycled fabrics of sheets, an old silk scarf, an old wrap around skirt, some fabric from the clearance area of Joann's and fabric people have given me.  All I bought was the discount fabric, elastic, and thread.  There is a bargain everywhere I look!!!  This tutu is going in an art show October 14th for the 2nd Friday Art Walk in Springfield, Oregon.  I am looking forward to this event.

Life is cramping my blog style

Life is totally getting in the way of keeping my blog updated.  While I know I am not the only blogger out there with this issue I still feel bummed.  I am still working on the tutorial for the enlarged tank and hope to have it posted soon.
Here is what is happening in my real life.
I am also in the process of getting an art installation up in the next week or so!!!  I have a few projects that need finished for this.  Then, of course, there is work and my wonderful family with their appointments to rush off to.  Oh, did I mention the rehearsals for the an up coming show at Diablos.(http://diabloseugene.com/)  Plus, Xavia and I are preparing for Disneyland with the extended family at the end of October.  I do love my life and how busy it is.  I do apologize for not keeping up on my blog.  I hope I am forgiven.  Thank you for your understanding.  While I wish I could say it will never happen again, I know it will so, until next time, have an adventure in your own life and please tell me all about it.

Short but sweet article about me as an artist. Thank you McKenna.

This is an article that McKenna did on me on March 7, 2010.  Thank you McKenna.  She has studied journalism at the U of O.

Right now I’m in research mode by gathering information, setting up interviews and interviewing artists. Today I had an interview with Meisha Linwood, an artist who displays her work for the Whiteaker’s Last Friday Art Walk.  She invited me to her home where she offered me chai and a great interview. The walls were covered with artistic posters and both her and her daughter’s work.
Her artwork is displayed in Olive Juice, a store selling clothing, lingerie and gifts, and she is currently working as a leather-work apprentice. She went to welding school at Lane Community College, but decided that  this industry was not for her.
“I always wanted to be that political artist. But that’s just not me, ” Linwood said. Now her main goal is to create artwork that brings happiness and joy because she says that is the political stand in the long run. She has worked with recycled materials also because she likes to push herself to think about her work. She once created a sculpture out of a garbage can.
She always wanted to be in the First Friday Art Walk in Eugene, but thinks that the Whiteaker Last Friday Art Walk is more casual and she says that the people are more real, or at least seem to be. She calls  Eugene a small SoHo which is  all about art, community and makes Eugene interesting. Whiteaker also has low rent, which she says helps artists pursue their dreams without needing a large income to do so.

Busy First Week of School

Hopefully things have found their new places as everything start to settle down after the first week of school.  This year is a completely different schedule than last year.  Earlier wake up time.  So be it.  Please comment if you are a parent like me who likes to make all the doctor appointments and what have you after your kid/s have started school.  I have no idea why, when I have had all summer to make appointments, I make them the first week of school.  Silly me.  Maybe next summer I will be on the ball.  Hope everyone's school year is a good one, I know I have a great feeling about this year.

Getting Ready For The New School Year!!

It is that time of year to begin inventory on your kids clothes before school starts.  My goodness, I have to start all over with Xavia..  There were a few items that Xavia wanted me to alter, as she says, "Mom, we can reduce, reuse, recycle this."  Anyway, I got to put my sewing skills to work.  I have to admit here that reconstructing clothes is a bit scary for me.  I just have this pile of clothes that I plan on altering and I just sit on them.  I have these breathing exercises, sometimes it's  a pep talk to myself, to get over this fear.  Quilting is another one of those frightening endevors.  Enough of quilting for now.  The point I am getting to is that the clothing I reconstructed for Xavia turned out great.  I plan to post pictures when she comes home so you can see for yourself.  The real test, of course, is does Xavia like them?

What does Joyous Rebel mean to me.

The name Joyous Rebel came to me when riding my bike (I ride my bike a lot).  I make leather belts for Slash n' Burn(www.findcoolclothes.com).  This is an alternative clothing store/site.  They carry a lot of punk clothing.  My punk days are behind me clothing wise but not idea wise.  What I mean by that is I still think "punk" or independently.  Anyway, this store hangs local art for their Art Walks, realizing that my work isn't "punky" I wondered about a name that could imply punkiness without the angst.  Then it came to me "Joyous Rebel".  When others wish to be angsty and aggressive to promote change, I will be joyous, positive, smiley and wearing color to promote positive change.  I want to be an example of someone who is true to themselves.  I will be a rebel who brings joy, love, and compassion.  Anyway that is the idea.
